Gem and the Gemettes
Gem, a young pregnant Bengal cat, was seen at Moy Farm vets last week as she was having difficulty giving birth. Gem had already had two kittens at home but over the past 4 hours nothing further was seen and her owner was getting worried.
After a phone call to the receptionists at Moy vets Gem, her 2 babies and her owner came straight down to the practice for the vet to check her. The vet examined Gem and found that there was not a kitten obstructing the birth canal so advised that Gem should be admitted for an x-ray of her abdomen to check whether there were any kittens left inside. If there had been a kitten causing an obstruction Gem would have to have had to undergone a general anaesthetic and a caesarean section.
An x ray of her tummy revealed that she still had a number of kittens left so the vet gave Gem an injection into the muscle in her back leg which makes her contractions start again. Gem was then put into a warm, comfortable and quiet kennel with her two kittens and was closely observed from a distance so as not upset her.
Within the next hour Gem gave birth to another two kittens and after a second injection another two kittens were born as well!
After a final check by the veterinarian Gem was given the all clear and allowed to go home with her Owner and the new ‘Gemettes’ – all 6 of them!!
Well done Gem!!
